"Generic placeholder image" in Merchant Center: what it means and how to fix it
"Generic placeholder image" is an item-level issue: it affects the specific products it's attached to.
What it usually looks like on a store
On a store this is the main product photo slot holding the shop logo, a No image available graphic, a theme's sample picture or a coming-soon tile while real photos are pending. Fix it in the store admin by making a photo of the item itself the first image, then check that the product markup points to that photo too.
What Google says
The main product image is generic or a placeholder, such as a logo or a No image available graphic. These products stay disapproved until the image clearly shows the product, except in certain categories.
Examples of generic images that are not allowed include images that are logos or use the text "No image available".Google, How to fix: Generic placeholder image
Also seen as: "Image too generic".
How to fix it
Based on Google's help pages, in plain language:
- Give each product a primary image that clearly shows the product and meets the image specifications.
What to check on your website
These are the checks we run that relate to this issue. A problem in any of them can be enough on its own.
- No placeholder or template text: No lorem ipsum, default theme copy, sample products, "your store name" fields or coming-soon notices anywhere we looked.
- Product structured data: Each product page has valid Product markup (JSON-LD or microdata) with a name, image and offer.
Requesting a review
Google says changes may take 24 to 72 hours to show on the Needs attention page.
Questions
Can a website scan fix "Generic placeholder image"?
Partly. We check your product pages' markup for the related fields (no placeholder or template text, product structured data), but the fix itself is in your product data in Merchant Center or your feed app.
