Fix these first (5)

These are the problems most likely to cause a disapproval or suspension.

Fix first

Placeholder email address on your site (you@example.com)

A sample email address tells reviewers the contact details were never filled in.

you@example.com
How to fix it
  1. Replace it with a real address you answer, ideally on your own domain.

Can lead to: Insufficient contact information, Misrepresentation

Fix first

No return or refund policy found

We couldn't find a returns or refund policy linked from your store. Google's help pages list a missing return and refund policy as its own account issue, and it also feeds misrepresentation reviews.

How to fix it
  1. In Shopify admin go to Settings > Policies > Return and refund policy, write or generate the policy, and save. Then add it to your footer menu under Online Store > Navigation.
  2. Link it from every page (the footer is where reviewers and shoppers look for it).

Can lead to: Missing return and refund policy, Misrepresentation

Fix first

Default Shopify theme text

Template or filler text makes a store look unfinished or untrustworthy, which is one of the things Google's misrepresentation and website-quality reviews look for.

How to fix it
  1. Replace the text with real information about your business and products, or delete the section.
  2. On Shopify, open Online Store > Themes > Customize and check every section on the homepage and product template; theme defaults often hide in sections you never edited.

Can lead to: Misrepresentation, Website needs improvement, Generic or dysfunctional landing pages

Markup price doesn't appear on the page

The structured data says 29, but the prices shown on the page are $34.00. Google compares the feed, the markup and the page; a mismatch leads to "Mismatched value (page crawl) [price]" disapprovals.

How to fix it
  1. Find what's generating the markup price (theme, a reviews or SEO app, or a hard-coded snippet) and make it use the live product price.
  2. If the page shows a sale price, the markup price must be the sale price too. Converted currencies must match the currency in the markup.

Can lead to: Mismatched product price

Fix first

Markup says in stock, the page says sold out

The structured data marks this product InStock, but the page shows it as sold out and has no add-to-cart button. Google flags this as mismatched availability and can disapprove the item.

How to fix it
  1. Make the markup follow real stock (most platforms do this automatically; a custom or app-injected snippet may be hard-coding InStock).
  2. Update the product feed so availability matches, then re-check in Merchant Center.

Can lead to: Mismatched product availability

Should fix (12)

Weaker signals on their own, but reviewers weigh them together.

Should fix

Only a contact form: no email address or phone number

A form alone is weaker than a visible email or phone number. Google's misrepresentation reviews look for clear ways to reach the business.

How to fix it
  1. Show at least one direct contact method on your contact page and in your footer: an email address you answer (on your own domain if you can) and, if you take calls, a phone number.
  2. In Shopify admin go to Settings > Policies > Contact information to publish your business contact details, and add the page to your footer menu.

Can lead to: Insufficient contact information, Misrepresentation

Should fix

No business address found

We didn't find a street address or postal code on your contact page, footer or policies. Showing where the business is (or where returns go) is one of the clearest trust signals for reviewers and shoppers.

How to fix it
  1. Add your business address (or a returns address, if you work from home and use a mailbox service) to your contact page and footer.
  2. Use the same business name and address you use in Merchant Center and your Google Business Profile.

Can lead to: Insufficient contact information, Misrepresentation

Should fix

Shipping policy doesn't mention costs

The page doesn't say what shipping costs (free, flat rate, or calculated at checkout).

How to fix it
  1. State your shipping rates or how they're calculated, and any free-shipping threshold. Keep it in line with the shipping settings in Merchant Center.

Can lead to: Missing shipping costs, Misrepresentation

Should fix

No terms of service found

We couldn't find terms of service. Terms set out how orders, payments and disputes work, and their absence is one more sign of an unfinished store.

How to fix it
  1. In Shopify admin go to Settings > Policies > Terms of service, fill it in and save, then link it in your footer menu.
  2. Link it from every page (the footer is where reviewers and shoppers look for it).

Can lead to: Website needs improvement, Misrepresentation

Should fix

Your store uses different business names (2 pages)

We found "Driftwood Goods" (og:site_name), "Driftwood Supply Co" (footer copyright). Reviewers compare the name on your site with the name in Merchant Center; mismatches look like a store hiding who runs it.

og:site_name: Driftwood Goods
footer copyright: Driftwood Supply Co
How to fix it
  1. Pick one business name and use it in your site title, footer copyright, structured data, policies and Merchant Center business information.

Can lead to: Misrepresentation

Should fix

"As seen on" claim

Claims you can't back up (press mentions without links, medical or guaranteed results) are a classic misrepresentation trigger. Reviewers look for exaggerated or unverifiable promises.

osen product, collection, or blog post. As seen on HGTV. Hurry, only 3 left! Lantern Basket Lookbook About Con
How to fix it
  1. Remove the claim, or back it up on the page (link the article, cite the study, name the certification).

Can lead to: Misrepresentation

Should fix

http:// doesn't redirect to https://

Opening http://www.example.com/ didn't send visitors to the secure version of the site. Anyone following an old http link sees an insecure page.

How to fix it
  1. Add a permanent (301) redirect from http:// to https:// for every page. On most hosts this is a single "Force HTTPS" setting.

Can lead to: Inadequate data security

Should fix

Broken link "Lookbook" (HTTP 404)

A reviewer clicking around your store lands on an error page. Broken policy or contact links are a common reason a store looks unfinished.

How to fix it
  1. Fix the link so it points at a live page, or remove it from your menu.

Can lead to: Website needs improvement

Should fix

Broken link "FAQ" (HTTP 404)

A reviewer clicking around your store lands on an error page. Broken policy or contact links are a common reason a store looks unfinished.

How to fix it
  1. Fix the link so it points at a live page, or remove it from your menu.

Can lead to: Website needs improvement

Should fix

3 pages have no mobile viewport tag (3 pages)

Without <meta name="viewport">, phones show a shrunken desktop page. Google checks mobile landing pages separately from desktop ones.

How to fix it
  1. Add <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1"> inside <head> on every page (most modern themes already do).

Can lead to: Unavailable mobile landing page

Worth a look (5)

Not likely to cause a flag by themselves. Quick wins for trust.

Worth a look

Your About page is very short

A few lines doesn't tell shoppers much about who you are.

How to fix it
  1. Add a few specifics: who you are, where you're based, how you source or make products.

Can lead to: Misrepresentation

Worth a look

No Organization structured data on the homepage

Organization markup (name, logo, contact point, address) helps Google connect your site to your business details.

How to fix it
  1. Add Organization (or OnlineStore) JSON-LD to your homepage with your name, url, logo, email/telephone and address. Many themes and SEO apps can add it.
Worth a look

Urgency or scarcity message

Countdown timers, "only 2 left" and similar messages are fine when they're true. When they reset on every visit, they count as misleading.

https://www.example.com/
lection, or blog post. As seen on HGTV. Hurry, only 3 left! Lantern Basket Lookbook About Contact FAQ Shipping Privacy
How to fix it
  1. Only show urgency or stock messages that reflect real deadlines and real stock levels.

Can lead to: Misrepresentation

Worth a look

No payment methods shown

Shoppers like to know how they can pay before they reach checkout, and recognisable payment logos add trust.

How to fix it
  1. Most Shopify themes can show payment icons in the footer: Online Store > Themes > Customize > Footer > Show payment icons.
Worth a look

No GTIN or MPN in product markup (2 pages)

That's correct for products without a manufacturer barcode (handmade, your own brand). If you resell branded products, add the GTIN; listings without it can get limited visibility.

How to fix it
  1. For resold brand-name products, add the GTIN (UPC/EAN) to the product (Shopify: Barcode field) so it reaches both the markup and your feed.
