"Missing brand" in Merchant Center: what it means and how to fix it

"Missing brand" is an item-level issue: it affects the specific products it's attached to.

What it usually looks like on a store

Stores hit this when the vendor or brand field in the store admin is blank or holds a supplier's internal code, so the feed sends nothing usable. Products you make yourself can use the store name. The brand in your product markup should say the same thing, and that markup is where a scan can see the gap.

What Google says

The product requires a brand value but none was submitted; all Apparel & Accessories products need a valid brand. If you make the product yourself, you may use your store name; unbranded products should use the manufacturer or supplier name. Shoes, sunglasses, handbags and watches also need a GTIN or MPN.

Also seen as: "Missing value [brand]".

How to fix it

Based on Google's help pages, in plain language:

  1. Add a brand value to each affected product, plus a GTIN or MPN where the subcategory requires it.

What to check on your website

These are the checks we run that relate to this issue. A problem in any of them can be enough on its own.

  • Brand and product identifiers: Product markup includes a brand, and any GTIN (UPC/EAN/ISBN) has a valid check digit.
  • Product structured data: Each product page has valid Product markup (JSON-LD or microdata) with a name, image and offer.

Questions

Can a website scan fix "Missing brand"?

Partly. We check your product pages' markup for the related fields (brand and product identifiers, product structured data), but the fix itself is in your product data in Merchant Center or your feed app.
