"Preemptive item disapproval" in Merchant Center: what it means and how to fix it

What it usually looks like on a store

Look for a pattern rather than a single product: a theme that prints the compare-at price where Google expects the selling price, structured data that always says InStock, a sale that ended on the site but not in the feed, or a slow feed sync after inventory changes. Fix the pattern before asking for review.

What Google says

Google's term for disapproving products in advance when the price or availability in your product data doesn't match your landing pages. While a PID is in place, Google errs on the side of caution and disapproves products likely to break its requirements, and a review is needed to clear it. An account can also sit in a PID state through a review cool down. Google says automatic item updates reduce the risk.

How to fix it

Based on Google's help pages, in plain language:

  1. Open the price or availability issue on the Needs attention tab and download the affected products to see which mismatch triggered it.
  2. Make the price and availability in your product data match each landing page, and keep details, descriptions and categories consistent between site and feed.
  3. Turn on automatic item updates from the suggested actions card on the Issue Details Page.
  4. Request a review once the data matches. If a cool down is active, wait until the date shown on the Needs attention tab.

What to check on your website

These are the checks we run that relate to this issue. A problem in any of them can be enough on its own.

  • Price matches the page: The price in your structured data and social meta tags appears on the page itself.
  • Availability matches the page: Offer availability is set with a valid schema.org value and agrees with what the page shows (no "in stock" markup on a sold-out page).
  • Product structured data: Each product page has valid Product markup (JSON-LD or microdata) with a name, image and offer.
  • Currency matches: priceCurrency is set, and the currency shown on the page matches it.

Requesting a review

Google says a review is required to resolve a preemptive item disapproval. After unsuccessful reviews a cool down can disable the review button; its end date is shown on the Needs attention tab and Google support can't shorten it. Once fixes are live, Google's fresh crawl usually finishes within 24 to 48 hours.

Questions

Can a website scan fix "Preemptive item disapproval"?

A scan finds the website problems behind it (price matches the page, availability matches the page, product structured data, currency matches) and tells you how to fix each one. You still fix them on your store and then ask Google for a review where Merchant Center offers one.
